Steps to teach a dog to bow:

1. Make sure that your dog knows how to come, sit and lie down on command. The dog should also know what its name is and be responsive to it. If it can't do these things reliably, first you need to teach the dog the basic commands of dogdom.

2. Have the dog stand facing you, about two feet away. Hold a treat or toy so that the dog can see it, but don't let it eat the treat. If necessary, wave the treat a little so the dog is paying attention.

3. Say the dog's name, then add "Take a bow" and wave the treat downward. The dog should lower its head to keep its eyes on the treat. Immediately praise the dog and pet it. If the treat is small, let the dog have it and take out another one.

4. Repeat the trick a few times. The dog should eventually learn to associate the command with bowing its head and getting rewarded.

5. After several repetitions, try giving the "Take a bow" command without moving your hand to signal. If the dog can bow its head without seeing you wave the toy, it has learned the trick.

Tips:

- Do not feed the dog the treat while in the bowing position, because he won't bow until he sees the treat in your hand. However,If he learns that the treat comes after the bow, he'll be willing to perform for you without it right there all the time.

- If the dog doesn't catch on after several tries, take a break and practice again later.

- Your praise and approval are almost as good as a food reward to many dogs. Always be lavish in praising your dog when you train it.

- Be calm and don't make sudden movements. If you are excited, the dog will pick up on this and get hyper. You want the dog to be calm and focused.
