Dogs are wonderful and curious creatures. From the dawning of civilization, man and dog have survived and thrived together. That does not mean they fully understand each other, though.

There are a great deal of interesting facts about dogs. How many facts that are on this list did you already know?

1. Dogs have sweat glands between their paw pads. It is a common misconception that dogs do not sweat at all. Panting is their main method of cooling off, but they do, in fact, have sweat glands on their paws.

2. A dog is more flexible that a human due in part to the fact that their shoulder blades are not attached to the rest of their skeleton.

3. Dogs have three eyelids. The third eyelid is called the nictitating membrane or “haw”. This is what keeps the eye lubricated and protected.

4. The smallest dog on record was a maltese weighed only 4 ounces!

5. The largest dog on record was a mastiff and weighed 343 pounds!

6. A dog’s nose is unique. It is the equivalent to a human’s fingerprint and can be used for identification purposes.

7. Petting a dog has been shown to reduce stress, blood pressure, and anxiety in humans.

8. Dogs are able to learn commands easier when taught with a verbal command and hand gestures.

9. Some dogs are able to sniff out ailments including cancer, epilepsy, and even diabetes. Humans with these medical conditions can apply for an assistance dog.

10. The United States has the largest dog population in the world, followed by France.

11. Humans have about 5 million smell-detecting cells, while dogs have over 220 million.

12. On the other hand, dogs have 1,700 taste buds, while humans have about 9,000

13. Adult dogs have the mental capacity of a 2-3 year old human. That means they can understand between 150 and 200 words and any corresponding hand gestures.  

14. It has been reported that about a third of all dog owners will admit that they talk to their dog(s) on the phone and leave them messages when they are away.

15. Dogs can smell in another dog’s urine if the that dog is healthy or sick, male or female, or if they are happy or angry.

16. The Basenji is the only barkless dog breed in existence.

17. The shape of a dog’s face suggests how long the dog will live. Those with more defined features tend to live longer than those with flat, scrunched up faces are the opposite.
