Did you know that there is a organization that regulates pet food? It’s true. The organization is AAFCO, which stands for the Association of American Feed Control Officials. The organization is made up of volunteers from local, state, and federal levels who join together in order to set guidelines and best practices for the pet food industry. The organization is mostly made up of pet feed professionals.

There is some concern that because pet food professionals are part of the organization, they are really only looking out for their own interests, which is not always in line with what is best for the pets.

Even if this is true, AAFCO is a useful resource for people who are interested in learning more about the regulation behind the pet food industry and for people who are interested in starting their own pet food business.

What does AAFCO do?
The AAFCO is not a government body and cannot create laws or hold any regulatory authority. According to their website, the AAFCO has three main goals. Those goals include are 1. To ensure consumer protection, 2. To safeguard the health of animals and humans, and 3. To provide a level playing field of orderly commerce for the animal feed industry. Their scope covers the manufacture, distribution, and sale of animal feeds.

Starting a pet food business
The AAFCO is a very good resource for anyone interested in starting a business that will make and/or sell any kind of animal food or treat. Their website contains tons of information from labeling you pet food to what can be considered organic to how to calculate the calorie content of your food.

If you are starting a new pet food business, there are lots of forms to fill out. This AAFCO site page can help but offering those forms and explaining them in easy to understand terms.

The AAFCO site breaks down the state feed program by state. Simply go to this page and click on your state to get started. From there, it will list the state’s feed program, offer a link to the website, and even tell you what to click on that page.

Other resources and information contains links to many other useful resources for pet food professionals including the FDA. These resources are useful for pet professionals who want to make sure they are not using contaminated feed products and are keeping up to date with their industry.

Pet food is very important for the overall health and wellbeing for the pets we love. A good diet might be the most important ingredient for a happy, healthy companion.
