With shows such as “It’s Me or The Dog” and “Must Love Cats”, channels such as Discovery and Animal Planet obviously realize how much people love their pets. They even watch TV shows about them. And it is no wonder why. These shows are as informative as they are fun to watch.

Take the show, “It’s Me or The Dog” for example. The hostess, Victoria Stilwell, is an English woman with a thick accent who goes from home to home around the States to train pets who seem untrainable and make the owners understand their responsibilities as well. Victoria’s training methods are easy to follow and make sense. As long as the pet owners stick to the lessons, even the most unruly dogs turn out to be lovable and agreeable.

Stilwell’s has quite a bit of good advice for pet owners. Her tips are of the holistic approach, so they take your dog’s overall health and wellness into account. Instead of focusing on one trick, she tells us to take time to think about how our dogs learn and gather information from their surroundings.

What this means is that dogs have stronger sense of smell than humans, but poorer vision. They learn by smelling what is around them. While we might sit in the backyard and observe what is around us, dogs walk around with their noses to the ground, sniffing everything. They learn in a different way than we do. So let your dog stop to sniff plants and things on walks.

Here is some more advice from Stilwell, “Effective leadership isn’t about dominating your dog and making him submissive toward you. It’s about being a teacher and building his confidence. You can achieve that by encouraging and rewarding good behavior.”

That is good advice. Pet owners may end up making their dog scared of them instead of respecting them. You do not want your dog to be afraid of you. But you should also not allow your dog to think that he is the boss.

Stilwell also knows that a good diet may be the number one most important aspect for a healthy and happy dog. Feeding your dog a low quality food may exacerbate allergies, but it also does not provide your dog with the nutrients and minerals needed for a good health. As the old saying goes, you are what you eat. This is true for dogs as well.

Making sure your dog has a good, well balanced diet and is exercised enough are the top keys for a happy and healthy dog.
